How to clean your Christmas decorations - Part2

Sorting out the Christmas tree and all the decorations that go along with it can be a rather big job. I cannot stress enough how much easier this job is when everything is stored properly. Make sure that water cannot get near your decorations if you would like to put them out next year.
When you pull them out this year a quick clean before they get put out will go a long way to making everything sparkle. Make sure you have a feather duster, micro-fibre cloth and if you have really old and delicate decorations wear gloves while handling them.
Plastic, resin, ceramic and metal decorations can be cleaned by dusting them. If they are still dirty you can use a light spray of Blendwell Chemicals Window Cleaner as we discussed in part one. Be sure to wipe off a clean cloth afterwards. You could also clean them with a solution of Blendwell Chemicals Greendet and water. Simply squirt a little Greendet into a sink full of water and put a cloth in the solution. Wring out cloth and clean your decorations. Wipe all your decorations afterwards with another cloth to wipe away any residual chemical. Never soak decorations or allow them to get too wet. They are delicate so please don’t clean too vigorously.
A micro-fibre cloth will go a long way in helping you clean your decorations particularly your wooden ones. These cloths are very gentle and don’t tend to scratch so you can use them to clean most of your decorations even if they just need a wipe.
Garlands that are made up of leaves may need a little bit of a dust too. Shaking or using a duster will most likely break these decorations. Rather use a hairdryer on a low setting to blow dust off.
To make this job easier next year find dry, dust-free storage for your decorations when you pack away your decorations after Christmas. For more information on cleaning and cleaning products please visit www.blendwell.co.za Blendwell Chemicals has a factory near the Gautrain station in Midrand. We are your local cleaning chemical supplier.

How to clean your Christmas decorations - Part1

Maybe you’re a bit of a kid like me and you’ve already put up your Christmas tree. I like to have mine out for at least a month and really enjoy it. Putting it all up feels a lot like a military operation with all the boxes and boxes that need to come out of storage and there is a very specific order in which items are to be placed on the tree.
You’re going to save yourself a lot of time and energy by storing your decorations correctly. It’s really important that your decorations cannot be attacked by any damp and the more delicate ones cannot be broken. Getting a couple of big plastic boxes, bubble wrap and tissue paper could be very useful. Be very careful with any decorations with glitter on them as you may wipe off the glitter whilst cleaning.
Glass ornaments will need to be wrapped up individually and when they come out of their wrapping a quick clean with Blendwell Chemicals Window Cleaner will work beautifully. In a 1 litre spray bottle pour in 80ml of Window Cleaner and fill up the rest of the bottle with water. Spray the ornaments and wipe gently with a soft clean cloth.
Plastic baubles that have been attacked by the grubby hands of an overexcited 3 year old can be cleaned the same way. Please be sure not to rub these ornaments too vigorously as the paint can come off. A gentle wipe should be all you need.

How to clean your garden furniture

It’s almost time for the festive season and most of us will be starting our summer holidays soon. You may be lucky enough to be going away but if not then no doubt there will be many plans to spend some time in your garden. Garden furniture if not cared for regularly can wear quite quickly. Wooden furniture needs yearly oiling or staining. Follow manufacturer’s instructions.
Plastic garden furniture needs to be cleaned with very light detergents for time to time. You can use a product like Blendwell Chemicals Greendet. This dish washing liquid will be gentle enough not to ruin the plastic. Squirt some in a bucket of water and fill up with water. Use a sponge to clean the furniture and rinse off with water.
It will be necessary to clean up spills as they happen. You can use a damp cloth for this. When done using the furniture for the day tilt the chairs towards the table so that the seats do not get rain or dirt on them. Cover the table if you can.
Blendwell Chemicals has a factory in Midrand near the Gautrain station. For more information on this and any of their other products please visit www.blendwell.co.za Blendwell Chemicals is your local cleaning chemicals supplier.

How to clean your washing machine?

Your washing machine is one of those machines that probably seldom gets a second thought unless it’s broken and there’s school tomorrow and you have no clean uniforms and sports clothes. Every once in a while it is necessary to give your washing machine a quick clean. For the most part your washing machine will clean itself but it doesn’t hurt to give those other parts of it a quick once over.
Start with the outside of your machine. Mix up a solution in your sink of a squirt of washing-up liquid like Blendwell Chemicals Greendet and fill up sink with warm water. Then take a cleaning cloth that has been dipped in the solution and wring it out. Use this cloth to wipe down the exterior of your washing machine.
Cleaning the inside of your washing machine will need a wipe down just like you did the outside. Don’t forget to do the inside of the door.  For the parts of the door that may have crevices you can use an old toothbrush or a pipe cleaner. The drum that your clothes sit in will get a good clean every time you use the machine.
If the machine has a musty smell to it still you may need to run a wash cycle without any clothes in it. When you do this, run at your hottest temperature setting on your machine. When your machine has finished this cycle leave the door open for as long as you can help the smell go away. Don’t forget to clean out the drawer where your cleaning chemicals go for each wash. You can usually remove this drawer completely and clean it. Chances are you will only need to clean with water but it may need a bit of a rub with a cloth. Also don’t forget to empty out the lint tray.

How to clean your bin

It’s been wonderful having these hot summer days. One downside of the hot weather is how quickly things we have thrown out begin to smell. Bad odours from bins especially our large outdoor black bins can be a real problem in this weather.
One way of dealing with this unpleasant problem is to use Blendwell Chemicals Black Bin Cleaner. This cleaning chemical is not classified as a disinfectant but rather a deodorizer. It should work brilliantly on your bin at home, office and any place where bins need cleaning.  Use rubber gloves and safety eyewear and avoid accidental spilling.
Mix 200ml of this industrial cleaning chemical with 9.8 litres of water to make up a 10 litre solution. Pour some into your black bin and it will probably be easiest to use a broom to then clean the bottom and sides of the bin. When all the grime has been washed away, empty the bin and rinse thoroughly with clean water.
Blendwell Chemicals manufactures Black Bin Cleaner and many other cleaning chemicals. To see what we manufacture please visit www.blendwell.co.za. Our factory is in Halfway House, South Africa. We are your local cleaning chemical supplier!

What is safety equipment? Part 2

In part one we looked at gloves and eyewear. Here we will look at other types of safety equipment that are often required when dealing with cleaning chemicals.
Often forgotten is safety footwear. Proper boots or shoes should always be worn when dealing with cleaning chemicals. Firstly, they will protect the skin on your feet from accidental spills. Secondly, they should have steel toe caps and these would protect your toes should you accidentally drop anything heavy on your feet.
Overalls are a very important part of safety gear. Wearing a suitable overall is imperative. Typically a blue overall has the same protection as wearing a pair of jeans. If dealing with harsh chemicals it may be better to rather look at an acid-proof overall which is usually bottle green in colour and if dealing with flammable materials you could rather buy a flame retardant overall (these are usually fern green in colour).
Safety respiratory masks may be required in conditions where products can be harmful to lungs. This may be because the dust off a powder product could hurt the lungs or the fumes off a liquid product could create a problem.  Where safety respiratory masks are required a dust mask will not suffice. These are simply ineffective and you would be better off with a proper breathing unit.  A safety respiratory mask could be a single or double depending on requirements. Cartridges will need to be replaced from time to time and the appropriate cartridges will need to be used. Cartridges are made for different proposes so be sure you have the right type.
When dealing with cleaning chemicals these would be the most common types of safety gear. However, there may be other requirements for specific chemicals. Product information should very clearly state if other types of safety gear is required. Please follow the advice given. If there is no safety advice given with a product, always get in touch with the manufacturer to make sure about what you may require.
Please visit the Blendwell Chemicals website at www.blendwell.co.za for information on cleaning chemicals that we have in our range. Blendwell Chemicals is a manufacturer of cleaning chemicals that has a factory in Midrand South Africa.

What is safety equipment? Part1

You’ll see in most of my blogs that I recommend that wearing of rubber gloves or even goggles. The recommendations can vary from wash hands after use to wear full safety gear including breathing apparatus and acid proof clothing. Thankfully, the cleaning chemical industry seldom requires the use of full protective gear. Although, from time to time there will be a need for breathing apparatus.
At Blendwell Chemicals, we would rather have you use too much safety equipment than not enough. We would always rather be safe than sorry. Please do not take this as an opportunity to not use safety equipment because you think we might be overly cautious. Please understand that people can respond differently when exposed to exactly the same thing. Many people have absolutely no problem washing a couple of sinkfuls of dishes without using household gloves and have no problems afterwards. The same experience for another and they may well have an outbreak of eczema so bad that it requires months of treatment with a cortisone cream. Please do not make the presumption that you may not be affected badly as you won’t know until you react.
When the recommendations are for gloves these would not be household gloves that one would wash the dishes with – they are usually yellow. These gloves wear down very quickly and tear extremely easily. The gloves required are thick rubber gloves. These gloves are usually a reddish colour and should either have an elasticated wrist or should come up to the elbow. The ones that are elasticated at the wrist are suitable for when the hands will not be submerged in the cleaning product and the user is wearing a suitable overall.
Safety eyewear would normally be a pair of safety goggles. Ideally, this would be a pair of goggles that would fully enclose the eye and make contact with the skin all the way around the eye. Wearing normal glasses is not enough. Normal glasses might prevent some minor splashing to reach the eyeball but that’s about it. A major splash and any dust and the eye would not be protected. It is possible that the eyes can start itching and burning in the presence of some chemicals, even when there is no direct contact, if goggles are worn you can protect your eyes.
Blendwell Chemicals is a manufacturer of cleaning chemicals that is based in Johannesburg, South Africa. Please visit our website at www.blendwell.co.za for information on all our cleaning products. Please look out for the second part of this article.

What is a MSDS?

MSDS is an acronym for material safety data sheet. A MSDS is a very useful document that contains all sorts of information about a chemical. This chemical can be a raw material or ingredient or it could be a finished product.

The information one would find on a MSDS can vary slightly from country to country but generally a MSDS will provide information on the chemical and specify safety requirements when using that chemical.

A MSDS will have information on how to handle the chemical and what someone working with the chemical needs to be aware of. How toxic or poisonous the chemical might be and what safety gear would be required would be found on the MSDS. You can also expect to find information on any health effects and what first aid procedures should be followed if someone came into contact with the chemical.

Details of the chemicals boiling point, melting point and flash point would be on the MSDS. As well as how to store the chemical, what to do if it spills and how it would react if the place it is stored is on fire.

It is very important for anyone who is handling chemicals to know how to treat each one as they all have different requirements depending on their specific make-up. Blendwell Chemicals has MSDS’s for each product they manufacture. For more information on the cleaning chemicals made by Blendwell Chemicals please visit www.blendwell.co.za. How to clean your cooler box

With the holidays just around the corner, it may just be time to haul out your cooler box and give it a good clean. There’s always a good chance that when you do get it out to use it, when you open it you’ll find it has a rather musty smell inside.
It is always a good idea to clean out the cooler box straight after use. If you have used it only for some drinks and nothing spilt then a simple rinsing out will do. If you used it for storing some meat you would be better off disinfecting it first or if it wasn’t cleaned properly after last use. Easiest way to do this would be to start with making sure the cooler box is empty and no food particles remain. Then take 5ml of Blendwell Chemicals Bleach and add one litre of water. You can either wipe this on with a rag (remember a cloth is likely to get bleached too) or you could put the solution into a spray bottle and spray it into the box. Make sure you have wiped the inside of the box thoroughly and then rinse with clean water.
Now that you know how to disinfect the cooler box you should also know how to clean the inside too. Use a dishwashing liquid like Blendwell Chemicals Greendet. Simply squirt some dishwashing liquid into a sink and fill up with warm water. Using a sponge or cloth wipe the inside of the cooler box with the solution and clean thoroughly. Rinse with clean water.
Whenever you clean out your cooler box be sure to dry thoroughly after cleaning or disinfecting. It would be a good idea to leave it in a sunny spot for a few hours to make sure it dries out.

How is Ecolabel Awarded?

Ecolabel is a European wide accreditation that is awarded to products or services where these products or services are superior to others in their field as well as being environmentally friendly. For a company to be awarded Ecolabel is a tremendous achievement. The criteria for being awarded Ecolabel are extremely stringent and encompass all aspects of the business and the production process.
Because Ecolabel is spread through Europe, independent and impartial bodies administer Ecolabel on a national level. It is the duty of these bodies to assess applications. In the case of Delphis Eco products being awarded Ecolabel, they were assessed by Defra. Defra is the Department for the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs and they award Ecolabel in the UK. They are answerable to EU Ecolabel and have to follow very particular guidelines before awarding Ecolabel.
Delphis Eco is passionate about creating great products that are environmentally friendly. Delphis Eco cleaning products are manufactured in South Africa by Blendwell Chemicals under license to the UK. What is Ecolabel?

What is the Flower?
Ecolabel is an accreditation that is awarded to only the best environmentally friendly products. The Ecolabel mark is a flower and as such Ecolabel is often referred to as the Flower. Major criteria of the Flower being awarded is that the product or service that is awarded the Flower is equal to or better than the top five non-ecological leaders in the same market. This means that by carrying the Flower a company produces superior products that are environmentally friendly too.
When it comes to judging how environmentally friendly a product is there are many aspects of a product or service that are judged by Ecolabel. A product needs to be environmentally friendly through every stage of its production. The entire lifecycle of a product is investigated. It begins with which raw materials are selected and what their environmental impact is. The type of production process that is required to manufacture the product is closely scrutinized as well as how the product is distributed and the environmental impact that is created by transporting and storing the product. Finally, how the product is disposed of and the processes that may be required to do this safely are studied.
For  a company to be awarded the Ecolabel Flower is a huge honour  and requires a massive amount effort being applied to every aspect of one’s business. Delphis Eco has been awarded Ecolabel for some of its products. In South Africa, Blendwell Chemicals manufactures the Delphis Eco range under license to the UK. Please visit www.blendwell.co.za for more information on the Delphis Eco range and all the other cleaning products manufactured by Blendwell Chemicals.

What can Blendwell Chemicals do for you? Part 2

What we can do for you – Toll Manufacturing
Blendwell Chemicals has been manufacturing cleaning chemicals for 20 years. Charles Marais started Blendwell Chemicals in 1990. He brought with him 30 years of experience in the cleaning chemical manufacturing industry.  It was part of his vision to create a company that could focus on creating high quality, unique cleaning chemicals.
Part of this vision required doing some very specific formulating in order to meet customer needs. Some customers have their own formulations which Blendwell Chemicals manufactures for them. Confidentiality Agreements are signed between the parties and Blendwell Chemicals then produces these cleaning chemicals according to the customer’s specifications. Other clients know what they want their cleaning product to do but do not know how to make it. Blendwell Chemicals will them be able to create a formulation for that cleaning product.
The customer often arranges for specific branded packaging for these products to be packed into. This is usually called own label manufacturing. Blendwell Chemicals will be able to pack these cleaning products so long as the packaging sizes are similar to what Blendwell Chemicals already packs into. Generally this would be 5 and 25 litre sizes.
We are able to help you every step of the way. We have excellent formulating abilities to create the cleaning product you want and can give you the peace of mind that your products will always be made the way they’re supposed to be. We are SABS and ISO9001 certified.

What can Blendwell Chemicals do for you? Part 1

Who is a Blendwell Chemicals Customer?

Blendwell Chemicals is a manufacturer of cleaning chemicals based in Halfway House, South Africa. We manufacture a huge range of cleaning products that are used in a huge variety of industries.
Blendwell Chemicals does not sell its cleaning products to the people who use them or end-users. Rather, Blendwell Chemicals has chosen to remain a wholesaler and sells to companies who resell their cleaning chemicals.
As a wholesaler, we do not have a brand of cleaning chemicals that we try to promote. It would then be up to the reseller to create their own brand and make a name for themselves. Our products are sold with information labels if required. Otherwise they can be purchased without any labeling and you can put on your own. Of course, it would be necessary for cleaning products to have safety information on the containers themselves which is why so many of our clients opt for our information label being on the product.
Our reseller customers range from traders who have added cleaning chemicals onto their existing range of supplies which they then sell to small businesses to traders who specialize in cleaning chemicals and sell to large corporations. It is up to each individual reseller as to how they want to market and sell their product. Blendwell chemicals can offer you the peace of mind that you are selling high quality cleaning product and give you great technical back-up for you to be able to close any deal.
Please visit our website www.blendwell.co.za for information on the huge range of cleaning chemicals that we manufacture and get in touch with us if you need any help setting up your new business as a reseller of cleaning chemicals. How to clean food preparation surfaces – degreasing

In the industrial kitchen and food factory there is a huge amount of cleaning required. It is imperative that the industrial kitchen gets cleaned frequently so as to avoid the growth of bacteria and enzymes. Should a food factory have a problem with bacterial growth, one can expect a huge loss of product.
The types of cleaning products used to clean an industrial kitchen and food factory need to be carefully selected. For cleaning an area that is going to come into direct contact with food, particularly meat or fish, it is a good idea to use a cleaning product that does not have any fragrance. Fragrance can help speed up and the growth of bacteria as well as contaminate the taste of the food.
A great product to use to clean these surfaces is Blendwell Chemicals Quot HF. Quot HF is a general –purpose detergent disinfectant. This makes it ideal for use in food preparation areas as cleaning and disinfecting can happen in one easy process. Quot HF will quickly lift off grease and oils for your table top. When using any cleaning product it is always a good idea to wear gloves and safety eyewear.
First, dilute 100ml of Quot HF in 4.9litres of water. Then you can either wipe or spray on the cleaning solution. Follow this with wiping the area with a clean damp cloth. The surface should now be perfectly clean.

How to clean an industrial oven - degreasers

In the industrial kitchen, cleaning is of paramount importance. Due to constant use, regular cleaning is vital. Industrial ovens often get coated in grease and oil as well as having the problem of completely burnt pieces of food stuck to the interior.
To clean an industrial oven, you can use a product like Blendwell Chemicals Alkali Cleaner. This cleaning chemical is caustic based and will do an excellent job of making your oven shine. Do not use Alkali Cleaner on domestic ovens or on self-cleaning ovens. When using this cleaning chemical be sure to always wear gloves and safety eyewear. In order to aid the cleaning power of this chemical it has been designed with a pH of around 12. This means that it should not come into contact with skin or eyes at all.
Mix 1 litre of Alkali Cleaner into 5 litres of water. Ideally you should use warm water. It is easiest to spray this solution onto the interior surfaces of your oven but you can also use a cloth to spread it on. Leave the solution to activate for about 20 minutes. After this time you should be able to wipe off with a cloth. If all the dirt has not been removed you can increase the concentration of the solution. Add another 50ml to your original solution. Repeat the process again. Be sure once the oven is clean that you wipe down the interior with a clean wet cloth to remove any chemical residue.
You would be able to buy Alkali Cleaner from Blendwell Chemicals in Johannesburg, South Africa. We are your local supplier. Please go to our website at www.blendwell.co.za for more information on all our cleaning chemicals.

How to clean your kitchen sink

It’s not a bad idea to give your kitchen sink a good clean every once in a while. Lucky it should see a good amount of soap so yours may not be too bad, but even soap can leave a residue.
It’s important to remember that most sinks can scratch so do not use abrasive cleaners. You should always wear gloves and be sure to not splash product in your eyes when doing any kind of cleaning. For lightweight cleaning, you could consider using a product like Blendwell Chemicals Cleardet. What’s great about Cleardet is that it does not have fragrance. This means that it will not interfere with any food that comes into contact with the surface that has been cleaned with it. Simply add 50ml to about 5litres of warm water and clean all the parts of your sink. Don’t forget to include the plug and plughole and the taps. Use a soft sponge or cloth to clean and rinse thoroughly with clean water when finished.
If you have some marks that don’t respond to this solution you can try a product like Blendwell Chemicals Maxikleen. You should use Maxikleen in the same way as Cleardet. Dilute 50ml in about 5 litres of warm water and only use a soft sponge or cloth to clean. Be sure to rinse thoroughly afterwards.
By  cleaning your sink regularly and making sure that solids are not washed down the drain you can limit the times you will need to unblock your drain. Be sure to check with the manufacturer of your sink that these cleaning methods are acceptable to their particular brand.
Blendwell Chemicals manufactures a huge range of cleaning products. They have a factory in Midrand South Africa. For more information on their range of cleaning products, please visit www.blendwell.co.za Blendwell Chemicals is your local supplier.

How to clean "green" - Delphis Eco Part 2

We recently discussed some of the benefits of using the Delphis Eco range of green cleaning products. This range of cleaning chemicals is great to use and here are some more benefits:

The Delphis Eco range of green cleaning products are such effective cleaners that they look to supply their clients with fewer products to clean with. The philosophy behind the creation of this range is that unless one is doing some seriously specialist cleaning there should be very few cleaning chemicals used. It is important to use fewer chemicals, not more so that less space is taken up with storing these cleaning products. This also significantly reduces costs. Most environments should only use four cleaning products.

Because fewer products are used and the products that are used are non-harmful and non-flammable, there is no need to have expensive training for your staff on how to store these products.

The green cleaning products in the Delphis Eco range are non-carcinogenic, non-toxic and non-harmful to marine and aquatic life. With the products being this safe, the user is able to have complete peace of mind that there will be no harm to him or his environment.

Delphis Eco green cleaning chemicals are super-concentrated. This means that much less product is used than when using traditional cleaning chemicals. Again this will cut down on storage costs. If you need to transport the cleaning product it will mean transporting much less product. Or rather, more cleaning product and less water would be transported.

The awesome Delphis Eco range is manufactured by Blendwell Chemicals, under licence to the UK. Blendwell Chemicals can be found near Johannesburg, South Africa. Please visit www.blendwell.co.za to view our full range of cleaning products

How to clean "green" - Delphis Eco

Blendwell Chemicals is very proud to manufacture the Delphis Eco range of green cleaning chemicals under licence to the UK. The Delphis Eco range is an amazing range of green cleaning chemicals that are extremely effective cleaning products as well as being very cost effective.

Delphis Eco products are environmentally friendly and readily biodegradable. They are predominately made up of plant based ingredients and Delphis Eco products have been awarded with the EU Ecolabel accreditation known as the 'Flower'. This is an incredibly prestigious award to receive. Delphis Eco strives to be green at every stage - from sourcing the ingredients, to packaging, to distribution.

For products to obtain the Ecolabel accreditation the products must not only be ecological but also perform as well as if not better than the top 5 non-environmentally friendly market leaders in it's class at least 85% of the time. Delphis Eco achieved a 92% success rate which is a great indicator of how fantastic these products are.

Usually green products are more expensive than non-environmentally friendly products and this is a huge reason why many companies do not go green. With the Delphis Eco range this is not the case. There have been so many technological advances over the years and these advances have allowed Delphis Eco to manufacture and supply the range of cleaning products without creating extra cost. In fact, this range can actually save you money.

Blendwell Chemicals manufactures the Delphis Eco range in South Africa. Please visit our website at www.blendwell.co.za for more information on this fantastic range of products. Blendwell Chemicals can be found in Midrand, South Africa. We are your local cleaning chemical supplier!

How to clean kitchen wall tiles

A kitchen is an area that can quickly get covered in layers of grease and grime that occur when cooking. Wiping down all the surfaces after use certainly helps keeping the grease at bay but sometimes it can build up in areas around that stove.

Daily cleaning with a squirt of dishwashing liquid, like Blendwell Chemicals Greendet, in a sink full of water can go a long way. Simply wipe down surfaces with a clean cloth that has been dipped in this solution.

For a deeper clean you may need to get more serious. The type of tiles that you have in your kitchen will determine how you clean them. Glass tiles will need extra care as they are very prone to scratching. You will need to use a soft cloth and be very gentle when rubbing. Glazed ceramics tiles can take a little more aggression but it is still better to not be too hard on them. Cleaning is made a great deal easier with grout that has been properly sealed. The dirt can then be wiped away and no heavy scrubbing is required. If the grout is not properly sealed it will stain really easily and you will be left with unsightly marks that penetrate through the grout and no matter how much you scrub the marks do not disappear. In this case, it is best to consider redoing the grout and sealing.

The quickest way of cleaning the tiles is to find a spray bottle and fill it with 50ml of Wac GP Cleaner and 450ml warm water. Spray this solution onto the tiles and leave for 5 minutes. At this point you should be able to simply wipe off any residue grease and dirt. If the grease is just too stubborn then add an extra 50ml of Wac GP Cleaner to your spray bottle, spray the area and leave for 5 minutes to activate. After removing all the grease wipe the area with a clean wet cloth to remove any left over chemical.

For more information on Wac GP Cleaner and any of the other cleaning products that are manufactured by Blendwell Chemicals, please go to www.blendwell.co.za. Blendwell Chemicals is a cleaning chemical manufacturer based in Midrand near the Gautrain station. We manufacture a huge range of cleaning chemicals.

How to clean your driveway

Cleaning my driveway is not a job I particularly enjoy doing but once it's done, it looks so good. Whether your driveway is concrete or brick you can clean it in pretty much the same way. Driveways should get a good clean about once a year.

It's never a bad idea to wear gloves, safety eye wear and gumboots. Your shoes could easily get damaged from the water and the chemical if you are not careful.

First start with a good sweep to remove leaves, dust and dirt. Then you can use a product like Blendwell Chemicals Maxikleen. Start with a mixture of about 80ml into a 5 litre bucket of water if your driveway isn't that dirty. If your drive way is very dirty then you can try starting with a mixture of 400ml in a 5 litre bucket.

Splash an area with a little of this mixture and spread it out with a broom. Do this over the whole driveway and leave the solution on for at least 5 minutes. Depending on the size of your driveway, by the time you are finished spreading the solution you can probably go back the area you started with. Using a stiff broom, scrub the surface of the driveway and work in the solution. Be sure to scrub well between the bricks or joins of concrete. Once completed, you should hose your driveway down with your garden hose. Be sure to also rinse off your shoes and wash your hands.

If you are left with any areas that still require extra cleaning then increase then amount of chemical you originally added to make-up the solution and clean in the same way on just your problem areas as before and hose down the entire drive way afterwards.

What is a degreaser?

In the cleaning industry, you will come across the term degreaser quite frequently. A degreaser is a cleaning product that has been designed to lift grease, oils and fats from a surface. Degreasers can be solvent or water-based and are usually highly effective at cleaning very difficult to clean objects.

Typically one would use a degreaser to clean factory floors, machine parts, industrial stoves and kitchen appliances to name but a few.

Degreasers usually contain solvents to help lift the grease and grime off the surface. These solvents are usually classified as flammable and highly flammable. It's a good idea to first test what you are needing to clean with a water-based degreaser that contains less solvents but might be easier to use. Degreasers often also contain surfactants which also help to reduce the surface tension of water and lift dirt and grease off surfaces. It is important to find the right degreaser for the job you are wanting to do with the perfect mix of solvent and surfactant to get the job done quickly, properly and easily.

Blendwell Chemicals manufactures a fantastic range of degreasers that are highly effective. We manufacture both solvent and water-based degreasers as well as some green degreasers too. Blendwell Chemicals is based in Halfway House, South Africa and manufactures a huge range of cleaning products. How to clean "green" - Dosing - Ratios

As I have already discussed it is very important to dose your cleaning chemicals correctly. The reasons for this are saving you money, saving you time and saving the environment.

When using cleaning chemicals, many people do not quite understand the instructions that come with the products. It's easy enough to follow when the instructions read that you should add one scoop (when the scoop is provided) and fill a 5 litre bucket with water. Unfortunately, it is not always that simple.

Sometimes instructions will read one part cleaning product to five parts of water. This is where mistakes can often be made. I have put together a table that will hopefully help you or your cleaners to avoid making any mistakes. I have broken it down into mixing up solutions of 1,4,10 and 20 litres. If you need to mix a different quantity you can still use the table as a guide. In each block the first quantity listed is the amount of cleaning product and the second number would usually be water. Please check product instructions carefully and it is always a good idea to at least wear gloves, if no other safety gear is required, even when only mixing the solution.

How to clean "green" - Dosing

We all like the idea of green cleaning and becoming super heroes who can save our planet. But we need to get rid of some of the old and incorrect ideas about cleaning in order to do that.

One mistake a lot of people make when cleaning is that randomly pour their cleaning products into a bucket of water and off they go. Using cleaning products at the recommended dose is a very important thing to do. Firstly, by using too much of the cleaning chemical, you're probably wasting a lot of it. This is like throwing money down the drain. Do I have your attention now?

Secondly, by using too much cleaning chemical we often do not help the cleaning process but rather hinder it. Less is more in cleaning. Many cleaning products become less effective in greater quantities. Thirdly, they will then leave a large amount of residue which instead of repelling dirt will now attract it. It is also harder to clean away the excess chemical and this will cost you time.

If saving you money and saving you time has not yet convinced you to follow recommended dosing of cleaning products, then hopefully the need for green will. The extra, unnecessary chemical that is used will then be washed down the drain and will join up with every extra bit of cleaning chemical that everybody else used and will further pollute our waterways. There was a very interesting tv programme on SABC 3 last night about the water crisis that we in South Africa are facing, particularly in Gauteng. It is frightening to think that we are running out of clean water and that our rivers are becoming so polluted that the we are affecting not just South Africa but Botswana, Mozambique and the Indian Ocean as well. The mines have added to this problem enormously by pumping uranium-rich water into our water ways and our water systems just simply cannot cope with the man-made additions. The rising water table in Johannesburg is not just some urban myth. Friends of mine who live in Melville recently came home to find their living being under water. Upon investigation they were told that it was due to the rising water table and that it is a very common problem these days. This rising water from the mines is not healthy living water it kills any organisms that try to live in it and wreaks havoc on the entire wild life system (including people) that need water to survive. Every possible thing we can do right, right now is going to help to tip the scale back to what it should be.

We are facing a water crisis and it is really important for us to not add to the problem. Please follow directions on your cleaning products and go green as often as possible as these cleaning products have much less impact on the environment. Whenever you are not sure how much to use rather start with less than you think you need - you can always add more.
