Unless your freezer is overflowing with ice, it’s easy to forget about cleaning it. Every once in a while though you do need to clean your freezer as sometimes food does drip out of containers before freezing and then the door get accidentally left slightly open. Before you know it there’s a gooey mess at the bottom of the freezer and everything starts getting sticky. It’s also a good idea to clear all food that is passed it’s time in the freezer.
When you remove the food from your freezer it’s a good idea to put it all together in one place out of the sun. If you can put them all in a cooler box that would be ideal. At this stage you can switch the freezer off at the plug.
If yours is the type of freezer that needs to be defrosted, you will need to start by putting a towel on the floor at the open door. Replace this towel as often as you need to. To speed up the defrosting process you can put a pot of hot water inside the freezer to heat it up and melt the ice. Do not scrape the ice away with a knife or spatula as you might accidentally puncture the casing of your freezer and this will cost a fortune to repair. When all the ice is defrosted you are ready to give it a clean.
A great freezer cleaning product to use at this stage is one from the Delphis Eco range. Blendwell Chemicals manufactures this eco-friendly range of cleaning chemicals under license to the UK from their factory in Midrand, South Africa. I would recommend the Anti-bacterial Sanitiser. Dilute 50ml of this green cleaning chemical in a one litre spray bottle filled up with water. Spray the cleaning solution onto the surfaces of your freezer and wipe with a clean cloth. When you have finished you can switch on your freezer and repack your food.
